Lawmakers Plan Response To Recalled Toys

Northwest lawmakers are responding to a recent spate of recalled children's toys.

The Oregon legislature is working on a bill that would punish stores that sell toys that have been recalled.

That’s drawing fire from business groups.  Harlan Levy  of the National Federation of Independent Business says the smaller stores he represents could suffer.

Harlan Levy:  “Someone could make a completely honest mistake, place one of these items on their shelf for sale, and then end up getting sued, and basically get put out of business.”

Lawmakers in Olympia are taking a different strategy.

They’re considering a proposal that would altogether ban the sale of toys containing certain chemicals, regardless of whether they’ve been recalled.

The bills in both Oregon and Washington go before legislative panels Wednesday.
