Obama Campaign Tells Voters Wrong Day For Caucus
Olympia, WA February 8, 2008 2:41 p.m.
Washington’s caucuses are Saturday. But that’s not what Barack Obama’s campaign told some Washington voters. Olympia correspondent Austin Jenkins explains.
Rhys Roth of Olympia was awfully surprised when got this message at home.
Obama Message: “Hello, I’m calling on behalf of the Barack Obama campaign to remind you to caucus for Barack Sunday, February 10th. If you have questions on where to caucus or what time, please call 866-675-2008 or visit barackobama.com. Thank you.”
Did you catch the mistake? The caller said Washington’s caucuses are on Sunday. But they’re actually on Saturday.
Roth, who’s an Obama supporter, didn’t know what to make of the message.
Rhys Roth: “I thought that was very odd and I was really concerned that someone is sending out misinformation in an attempt to mislead people.”
Turns out it wasn’t dirty politics. Instead, the Obama campaign says it was a mistake.
Volunteers who had been calling into Maine – which caucuses on Sunday – mistakenly gave the wrong day to an undisclosed number of Washington voters.
Obama’s folks say they’re calling back to tell people to caucus Saturday.
