Suspect Dies During Confrontation With Police
Portland, OR May 15, 2008 4:05 p.m.
Portland police serving a warrant in southeast Portland shot at a suspect early Thursday morning. The suspect was later found dead.
Pete Springer reports.
Portland police were helping FBI agents serve a federal warrant for Derek Coady near southeast 126th and Holgate.
Police spokesman Brian Schmautz says officers found Coady in an outbuilding on the property. Police say Coady was armed with a handgun.
Brian Schmautz: "Apparently as they were giving him commands, he made a quick movement towards the front of a vehicle and it was while he made that quick movement towards the front of the vehicle, that one officer fired at least one round."
Police are still investigating the shooting. However, they say evidence at the scene suggests Coady shot himself in the head.
The county medical examiner is doing an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
This is the second time this week that a suspect has died during a confrontation with Portland police.
On Tuesday, police responding to a homicide call shot and killed an armed man in northeast Portland.
