Silverton Police Officer Arraigned On Sex Abuse Charges
Salem, OR July 15, 2008 11:29 a.m.
The Silverton Police officer who fatally shot Irish national Andrew Hanlon made his first court appearance in Salem Tuesday on a different matter. As Andrew Theen reports, Tony Gonzalez was arraigned on sex abuse charges.
Gonzalez wore a green jumper and a tightly cropped goatee. Gonzalez was already on administrative leave pending an investigation into the fatal shooting of Andrew or AJ Hanlon last month.
Then allegations of sex abuse of a minor came to light and Gonzalez was arrested over the weekend.
Candy Carey lives in Silverton and befriended AJ Hanlon. She said the Hanlon family and the town want answers.
She called the investigation "astonishingly inept."
Candy Carey: "We'd like to see that they pursue all of the investigations, the investigation into AJ's death with vigor and with openness."
Gonzalez's court appointed attorney said he will schedule a bail hearing sometime before the officer's likely indictment on the sex abuse charges. A preliminary hearing is set for July 22nd.
