Courtney Calls For Investigation Of State Hospital
Portland, OR July 22, 2008 4:42 p.m.
Oregon Senate President Peter Courtney is calling for an independent investigation of the State Hospital after two patients escaped earlier this month. Courtney says the escapes point to the need for better security and a new facility.
Patricia Feeny is a state hospital spokeswoman. She says Courtney’s suggestion is a good one.
Patricia Feeny: “Senator Courtney has a welcome and an excellent idea, and it's not something that we hadn't considered, and he comes from a place where he has the best interest at heart for the patients, staff, and the community."
The hospital is currently conducting its own internal security review. The results won’t be available until next month.
The aging state hospital is being replaced. Construction will begin in the fall, but it won't be completed for 3 years.
Until then, Feeny says the hospital will be working closely with law enforcement to improve security.
