Obama, McCain See Fundraising Boost From Palin Pick
Portland, OR September 5, 2008 4:26 p.m.
John McCain's campaign saw a $4 million fundraising surge the day after Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was named to join him on the Republican ticket.
The day after Palin's speech to the Republican National Convention, Barack Obama's campaign raised $10 million. Ethan Lindsey reports that support is coming from Oregon, too.
McCain's campaign says it had never raised more than $1 million in a single day over the Internet before.
Several Oregon Republican leaders say they have been swamped with calls from voters who were sitting on the sidelines before - but are now willing to donate their time and money to the McCain-Palin ticket.
The fundraising is at least partly due to Palin's appeal to conservative, anti-abortion voters. They had, before Palin was named, been giving less than in the recent past.
Bill Lunch is the chair of political science at Oregon State University.
Bill Lunch: “Because of the enthusiasm that Palin has generated among Republican activists and the base, she will help with fundraising quite a bit - both here in the state and on a national basis.”
Before Palin was named to the ticket, Obama had raised $3 million in Oregon; McCain less than $700,000.
