Climber From Philomath Still Not Found On Mt. Adams
Portland, OR October 15, 2008 4:11 p.m.
Rescue workers are still looking for an Oregon climber missing on Mt. Adams. Becca Bartleson reports.
Derek Mamoyac arrived at Mt. Adams on Saturday in hopes of summitting the mountain the following day. Monday morning his family reported him missing when he failed to show up for work.
Mamoyac’s car was found later at the Cold Springs trailhead.
Sergeant Jerrold Towell is with the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office. They’re heading the investigation.
He says a hiker called Monday after seeing a news report, saying he might have seen the missing climber on Sunday morning.
Jerrold Towell: "He thought that Derek passed him trying to ascend at about nine thousand feet. He described him really well, they even spoke and he indicated that Derek told him he was going to the summit."
The 27-year-old man is described as an experienced climber and in good shape. He's from Philomath, Oregon.
