Bend, OR October 24, 2008 10:48 a.m.
Officials in Honduras say at least 29 people are dead in the worst flooding in that country in a decade.
Portland-based Medical Teams International says it plans to fly two doctors and two nurses there by Monday.
The nonprofit says it previously was working with aid efforts in Honduras, sending emergency medicines to treat ongoing diseases.
But the Christian nonprofit says aid workers in Honduras are now reporting a dire situation.
Barbara Agnew is a spokeswoman for Medical Teams International. She says the the relief effort could cost 80-thousand dollars.
Agnew: "In this economic crisis and these challenging times, that’s a hard thing to ask for. And with the economic crisis, and of course, the presidential elections, its hard to cut through that noise, if you will. The part that we need to do is work as hard as we can to get that to the forefront of people’s minds."
Forty-thousand people have been evacuated from their homes, after Honduras was hit by three consecutive tropical storms.
Other US aid organizations, including Water Missions International, are also sending money and resources to the region.
