Oregon Democrats Push For New Federal Stimulus Package
Portland, OR November 6, 2008 1:54 p.m.
Fresh from a round of political victories, Oregon’s Democrats assembled in Portland Thursday to urge the passage of another federal stimulus package. But, as Kristian Foden-Vencil reports, don’t expect a check in the mail any time soon.
Standing next a road that needs repaving, the Democrats said the best and fastest way to resuscitate a stalled economy is by repairing bridges, improving roads, and building new sewer systems. Portland Mayor elect, Sam Adams, unveiled an $850 million wish list, which he says would create 8800 jobs locally.
When asked how the country would pay for such a stimulus package, Senator Ron Wyden said it’s quite possible.
Wyden: “We are going to support pay as you go budgeting. You’re going to see your United States senators bring a sense of financial discipline, frankly that we haven’t seen by the Bush administration for the last eight years.”
The national debt has increased by about 21 percent over the last four years, with each citizen now owing about $34,000 dollars.
