2010 Olympic Torch Relay To Stay At Home
Olympia, WA November 24, 2008 10:49 a.m.
The Olympic torch relay for the 2010 Winter Games will not pass through any Pacific Northwest U.S. states.
Vancouver Olympic organizers have revealed the route the flame will take. It starts in Victoria. The long circuit from there stays entirely within Canada’s borders.
Organizing committee CEO John Furlong says it will be the longest domestic torch run in Olympic history.
John Furlong: “We continue today what started in Montreal in 1976 and Calgary in 1988, going far beyond this time what seems possible. Higher, faster, stronger ... 12,000 torchbearers from millions and millions who would like to carry that flame.”
The Olympic torch will skirt the U.S. border between Trail and Osoyoos, British Columbia.
The torch relay will also stop at Peace Arch Park, but not cross into Washington State.
Earlier this year, large and raucous protests greeted overseas stops of the Beijing Olympics torch. That seems to have soured organizers of subsequent games on taking the symbolic flame on an international tour.
