Redmond City Manager To Be Arraigned on Assault Charges
Bend, OR November 26, 2008 2:19 p.m.
The Deschutes County district attorney’s office says the city manager of Redmond faces arraignment Friday on an assault charge. The mayor of Redmond Wednesday says he is discussing the city’s response. Central Oregon correspondent Ethan Lindsey reports.
City Manager Mike Patterson was arrested November 16th in Redmond on suspicion of fourth-degree assault.
That’s a domestic violence charge – meaning the alleged victim was Patterson’s wife, or a relative. And at least one child witnessed the alleged assault, heightening the charge to a felony.
Patterson has not commented but is expected to enter a plea at the arraignment.
Officials say Patterson requested two weeks off, following the arrest.
Redmond Mayor Alan Unger says the city is deciding how to handle the matter – he says dismissing Patterson would be an option.
Unger: “Domestic violence is a serious issue and we don’t take it lightly. When something like that happens you want to make sure that law enforcement follows through and protects the people that need to be protected.”
Deschutes County is handling the case instead of city police because Patterson is a city executive.
