Global Health Studies Promoted As Way To Boost Washington Economy
Richland, WA November 28, 2008 9:38 a.m.
The study of global health issues is being touted as one way higher education in Washington State can help drive the state’s economy, even in tough budget times. Glenn Mosley reports.
Scientists at both WSU and the University of Washington are engaged in collaborative work on global health, and the Gates Foundation has given financial support to both.
In fact, Washington Governor Christine Gregoire points to the work being done at both universities as just one reason why spending decisions about higher education must be made carefully:
“I don’t want to jeopardize the leadership role they’re playing with global health, for example, which is 21st century industry and jobs for us.”
Scientists speaking in Pullman Friday to a joint Board of Regents meeting said the Pacific Northwest could become an epicenter for global health study because global health is a movement that generates great enthusiasm among students, faculty, and business.
They told the Regents that global health education is a launching pad to engage in international markets.
