Local Jewish Leaders Saddened By Attacks In India
Portland, OR November 28, 2008 12:21 p.m.
Rabbis in Portland are struggling to deal with news that gunmen in Mumbai, India have killed the directors of a Jewish community center there. Pete Springer reports.
Rabbi Motti Wilhelm just returned to Portland after attending a gathering of thousands of Chabad International members in New York City last weekend.
Chabad is a Jewish education and social service organization.
It's offices in Mumbai, India were one of many places attacked by militant gunmen earlier this week.
Those gunmen killed the directors of that center after holding them hostage for up to a day.
Rabbi Wilhelm says these deaths are very painful, like losing a member of his family.
Wilhelm: “Ultimately you know, it’s very difficult for the military to deal with this because this is an educational thing more than a military thing. People are being educated and being brought up with this society, with this determination, with this willingness to you know, harm others and to be harmed with them but we’re dealing with a whole new face of terror.”
Wilhelm says the true fight against terror is to promote good.
