Shoppers Still Shopping -- But Many Considering More Meaningful Gifts
Portland, OR November 28, 2008 3:05 p.m.
Malls and town centers buzzed with shoppers Friday despite the recent woes on Wall Street. But, as Kristian Foden-Vencil reports, many Oregonians seem to have more meaningful gifts on their minds than just the latest gadget.
On a street corner in downtown Portland, tree lights twinkled in front of shop windows decorated with wreaths. There are shoppers laden with packages, but many seem to just be enjoying the atmosphere.
Julie Wagener says she’s observing ‘National Do Not Shop Day,’ but she’ll be getting her checkbook out for good causes later on.
Wagener: “I have been thinking about gifts with a message, small gifts with either a green message, or a message of kindness to humanity. My husband is talking about having people donate to a charity instead of give gifts to him.”
Marketing executives refer to the day after Thanksgiving as ‘Black Friday’ or ‘Blitz Day’ – in the hope stores are going to be blitzed with shoppers, putting them back in the black.
About 100 people, fighting to stop the sale of fur coats, decided to use the day in Portland at least, to launch a new offensive.
