Lack Of Snow Means Oregon Ski Areas Remain Closed
Bend, OR November 28, 2008 4:15 p.m.
Skiers hoping to work off that turkey with some after-Thanksgiving ski runs were saddened to find out that Oregon’s resorts haven’t opened yet. Central Oregon correspondent Ethan Lindsey reports.
Bend’s Mount Bachelor is “open” this weekend, but only for a few hours – and only because the resort staff is trucking snow from the parking lot and dumping it on a few short trails.
Mt Hood Meadows and Willamette Pass are both closed.
And if you call the snow update phone at Hoodoo, this is what you’ll hear.
“We know a lot of you are just as excited as the Hoodoo staff for the this season to begin, we are hopeful that will happen soon. Pray for snow and do your best snow dance and we hope to see you soon.”
Local forecasters had predicted good November snow this year, and an early snowstorm seemed to prove them correct.
But warmer temperatures and rain melted those hopes.
Even cross country skiers and snowmobilers got some bad news this week – the U-S Forest Service announced it will keep some back-country roads open later than usual, until the snow comes.
