The Governors of Washington and Oregon will meet with President-elect Barack Obama Tuesday in Philadelphia.
Most of the nation’s governors are expected to attend the meeting to discuss the impact of the national recession on the states. Correspondent Austin Jenkins reports.
Washington Governor Chris Gregoire says she will ask Obama for federal money to jumpstart ready-to-go construction projects.
Chris Gregoire: “I look at the needs that we have in our state for an infusion of dollars to rebuild our infrastructure and the opportunity that presents for people that are out of work today because construction has slowed down as dramatically as it had.”
Gregoire also wants the new administration to increase federal funding for unemployment benefits and food stamps.
Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski is asking Obama to fund deferred maintenance projects on university campuses.
He says that would pump money into more rural communities where many state universities are located.
